Newsletter 2006 Letter March 12th: I couldn't wait any longer. The access by my fish camp still had some ice on it so I went North, not too far from the state line. At 6:00AM the air was in the 20's, the water 38 degrees. The river was up two foot from the day before acording to the water gauge on the computer and still on the rise. It was overcast with a light drizzle comming down. I had some new lures to try out for Alan Probst of Alan Probst All Outdoors, and a short time to do it because the wife wanted me to go to the relatives at noon.(we'll see). He had a 3" green pumpkin tube which I got a 14" smallie on in the deep slack water. And I got a 16" Walleye on a 3"Senko knock off he had given me. These lures I knew would work because I use simular lures all the time. The intresting lures he has are called a "Shad Flasher" They come in three sizes, a 2", 3", and 5". I won't get into detail yet about them, but I put the 5"er on with a medium rod and you use them like a jerk bait. Each time you jerk it, the gill flap turns back exposing a red collar underneath. About 8 casts in I let it drop to the bottom and started twitching it like a wounded minnow and WHAM, a small Northern Pike Hit it, 25" long. Another 10 casts and a bigger Northern hit it and about 30 seconds later, there went my new lure with the Pike. About $3.50 worth. Oh well, sorry Alan. Just for shits and giggles, I put a 2" one on a hair jig I had made and picked up another 15" walleye about an hour later. I had fun, I was back at the house by 11:00AM,(but I still don't plan on going to the relatives). We'll see. Myself and my clients will be testing the heck out of these lures this season. If you want some for yourself, I think he may have them or can get them for you at around $3.49/pk. I got a link for Alan on my links page if you want to check it out. March 30th: I went out by myself today from 12:30AM to 3:15 PM. The sky was sunny, and the water was 46 degrees to 48 degrees when I left. The water was also clear to 5 ft or so with a slow current. I used a 3" tube that Alan Probst gave me to try from someone who does home pours. Well Alan, I'll tell ya, that tube worked more than a little well. I the 2hrs and 45 min that I was out, I caught 42 smallies with seven trophies in the mix. The biggest being 18 1/2". Five out of the seven bass were over 17"! If I had two clients with me today for 8hrs, it would have been over a hundred fish day, AND IT'S STILL MARCH! Unless we get some cold wet weather, the bass will be spawning real early this year. All of the big fish were in 6 to 7 ft. of water. April 1st: First charter of the season. Brothers Tim and Brian Hamberger came up to go fishing with me for the first time. The sky started out overcast, then we had some rain, then in the afternoon we had high winds, 17MPH to 25MPH. And we had a great time. Why? Because we caught 144 fish that's why! This is no April Fools joke, the river water was 51 degrees, and clear down to 5 foot. Conditions are great! There was 1 walleye and 1 white sucker in the mix along with 8 trophy smallies. We only had to use one lure all day, and that was a 3" tube jig. The boys knew how to fish and the fish were turned on. This was a new one day record for the month of April. April 8th: Ed Nestor and Barry Buchecker came up fishing on a cold, 45 degree windy day. The sky was overcast, The water 44 degrees and clear down to 5 ft. The fish are still in their winter patterns, most of our fish were caught in 6 to 10ft. We caught 92 fish today, all smallies with 24 trophy bass, a new one day record for the big ones. Both men had made their own fishing rods which had worked very well. The fish were all caught on jigs, mostly tubes, fished as slow as as we could without getting caught on the bottom. Way to go guys! April 9th: Went fishing today with Kevin Redinger and Kurt Borman. The sky was sunny, the water was clear to 5ft and 42 degrees. We boated 42 Smallies today with 14 trophies in the mix. The biggest smallie was 19" , a great fish. For awhile Keven was boating a trophy fish every other fish he caught. He ended up with 7 trophy bass. Kurt caught several trophy bass himself. The fish are still in the winter holding areas in 6 to 12 ft of water. Tube jigs caught all the fish today. April 11th: Went fishing today with Marion Nunan and Barry Bingaman. The sky was sunny and the water clear visability down to 6ft. The water temp started out at 46 degrees and it was 50 degrees when we left after seven hours. We caught 104 Smallies today with 15 trophies in the mix, the biggest being 18". Marion had the hot stick today boating 55 fish and 10 trophies himself. Most of the fish were caught on tubes however we caught 22 smallies on a 3" hand poured do nothing worm I got from Alan Probst. A good day. April 13th: Rick and Ricky Liebert came fishing today. The sky was partly cloudy and the water clear to 5ft and 52 degrees. We caught 100 fish even today and would have caught more if a thunder storm hadn't threatened us. Young Ricky caught the 100th fish when I was getting the boat ready to outrun the storm. Ricky also caught a walleye in the morning. Rick had made me another custom rod, this time in a 6 1/2' medium light with a fast action tip, he put the same custom handle on it for me I have on my other one. I love it! It works great for spinners and jigs.We were doing great with tubes and do nothing worms, some of which I got from Alan Probst to try. They work great Alan! However, with the water temp going up over 50 degrees I had to get out the L.D.Guide All Fish Spinners to try. While they wern't the hot lure of the day, I did catch about 15 bass with them.It will only get better. There were 10 trophy bass caught, with a nice 18 1/2" Smallie being the biggest, caught on Alans do nothing worm. (We got to get a name for that). April 14th: Ed Nestor and Barry Buchecker came fishing today in the rain-all day long. The water was clear down to 5ft and 54 degrees. We caught a new record for April one day fishing which was 157 fish today! All smallies except for one carp and one small muskie, There were 9 trophy smallies caught with the biggest just a wisker under 19". Most of the fish were caught on jerk baits, jigs, and some on crank baits.Ed started us off when he tried a Husky Jerk, then Barry and I got in on the action with X-raps which I stayed with all day. A lot of fun! April 15th: Ed and Barry went fishing with me again today. The sky was sunny and the water clear to 4 ft and 56 degrees. We're starting to get a green algee tint to the water.Just when I thought it couldn't get any better this season, we caught a new all time ever most fish in one day record, 196 fish! All smallies with one large mouth in the bunch. There were 28 trophies caught, another new record, Ed caught 14 of them. The big bass of the day was a beautiful 19 1/2" caught by Barry. In the last two days the three of us caught an astounding 353 fish! All the fish were caught on suspending jerk baits. Now something always seems to happen when the three of us get together. Lets see, Ed paid the price in blood, first it was a jerk bait in the ear, I'll let him tell you about that. Then it was a treble hook deep in the thumb put there by a smallie. There was no way Ed was going to leave the boat for a doctor so he yanked it out by himself while I grit my teeth. Barry lost his good hat off his head while we were going in the jet boat, we never did find it.I found a potato in my lunch box, thank you Barry, he knows I'm on a carb free diet. I found Barrys lure he lost the day before floating in the river, I didn't offer to give it back either until the end of the day after I had caught 30 fish on it and broke off the back treble. He said I could keep it after that. All in all a simply great day. Way to go guys! April 17th: Went fishing today with John Snyder and 14yr old Evan Gill. The sky was sunny with a few clouds. The water was clear to 4ft and 54 degrees. We caught 116 fish today with one Large mouth in the mix, all the rest were smallies. There were 10 trophies in the bunch with a 17 1/2" being the biggest. We caught a couple on tubes in the morning then stayed with suspending jerk baits for the rest of the day.We saw a flock of great blue herons with more than 30 birds, it was quit a site. A good day with a couple of good guys. April 19th: Spent the day with Dan Butt and Mike Poddo from Maryland. The sky was sunny with afternoon wind. The water clear to 4ft and 56 degrees. We caught 129 fish today with one Northern pike and one sucker in the mix. There were 10 trophy bass caught with Mike catching one just shy of 19" for the big bass of the day. Mike also caught the Northern Pike about 27" long which after I netted it for him, the Pike decided to jump back out of the boat, takeing Mikes lure with him. Mike has a fishing website in Maryland, the address is www.mdfishing.org . Look it up and say Hi. April 20th: Paul Szyszko and Lou Quinn came fishing today under sunny skies and a light breeze. The water was clear to 5ft and 59 degrees. We caught 156 fish today with one sucker in the mix. There were 6 trophy bass with Lou getting the biggest at 17 1/2". Paul had the hot stick today landing the most fish. I finally lost that lure of Barry Bucheckers today when a Northern Pike came up and cut it cleanly off my line. All the paint was missing from the belly of the lure now but I had caught 260 bass on it. I wanted to see how many fish I could get on it before they had all the paint wore off it. Another great day. April 21st: Another great day! Kevin Readinger and Kurt Bornmann came up to go fishing with me. The sky was mostly sunny, and we had a bad front wind come in the afternoon. The water was 60 degrees and clear to 4ft. We caught 168 fish with two Northern Pike in the mix. The water came up 4 1/2 ft Sunday and today. Fishing conditions were tough, and in the afternoon the wind came up. We boated 28 fish with Allan boating two trophy bass, the biggest being 18 1/2" long. We also got 4 walleye with Barry getting the biggest at 23" long. Black tubes caught most of the fish today. April 25th: The river came up another foot last night, turned a dirty brown and was 50 degrees. Scott Williams and Brad Lindenmuth came fishing today under even tougher conditions than we had yesterday. With the afternoon came high winds which made it even more difficult. We caught 17 fish today with a walleye in the mix. There were 5 trophy bass caught. A 18"er was the biggest. We saw a pair of eagles, one was bringing more twigs to their huge nest, beautiful! I was lucky the tube caught it in the corner of the mouth and the guys said I played it for about 15 minites.During the fight at one point the fish jumped out of the water, what a sight! Without the help of Bob and Frank I never would have gotten it in the boat. My springs came in durring the day so I put them on the trailer tonight.
